Specialized Test Development

Hollow tube torsional shear fatigue tests – developed to provide low-frequency cyclic torsion fatigue for material qualification.

1 Hz shoe-on-block sliding wear test – designed to evaluate lubricants and wear-resistant coatings on mechanical interfaces in turbine engines under high-stress conditions.

On-Cooling tensile tests – developed to measure tensile strength of materials during thermomechanical processing.

1,000,000 in/lb torsion test machine – originally engineered to test helicopter rotor shaft repair welds, and later used to test truck suspension torsion springs.

Hydraulic rod seal wear machine – designed for evaluating the wear performance of chrome and candidate chrome replacement coatings for hydraulic actuators.

SPECIMEN PREPARATION

Metcut prepares 30,000 test specimens each year. We manufacture these specimens from a variety of materials using controlled processes, including low-stress grinding. Our skilled operators machine specimens from raw stock or fabricated components. That raw stock comprises all metals (including titanium, superalloys, and refractory alloys); metal matrix composites; ceramic matrix composites; and other non-metallics.

Specimen manufacturing can be part of a complete testing program, or a stand-alone service. We use specialized machining techniques–such as inertia welding, wire EDM, and CNC milling processes–to produce damage-free surfaces. We also utilize waterjet machining to minimize additional stresses to testing materials. Our waterjet system can cut materials up to 8” thick. This CNC-based tech allows for direct CAD geometry input as well as an integrated camera system to align and cut to any geometric form. We perform quality inspection on critical dimensions and attributes for all specimen groups.

Along with test specimen manufacturing, our capabilities also feature EDM crack starter notching and the production of NDT calibration reference standards. We also offer part modification for component testing, and can simulate a manufacturing process for a testing program.

MECHANICAL
TESTING

Metcut tests 30,000 specimens a year. In addition to these specimens we also design, build and operate many special fixtures to perform custom tests. We provide more than 105 MTS® closed-loop servo-hydraulic test machines, with capacities ranging from 2.5 to 220 kip and up to 90 Hz., to quantify and analyze fatigue and fracture behavior of structural materials.

Metcut maintains 30 mechanical machines for high-cycle fatigue testing. Over 141 creep/stress rupture units, four Universal machines assess tensile, compression, and other mechanical properties. Testing environments include specific gas and liquid media at temperatures ranging from -320°F to 2400°F. Our quality system assures consistent calibration and accurate data traceable to NIST.

METALLOGRAPHIC SERVICES

A critical step in evaluating engineering materials is microstructural analysis. Our Metallurgical Lab technicians perform sectioning, mounting, polishing, and examination of metallographic specimens. This facility supports our engineers by providing insight and valuable microstructural data. Such information can be used for product improvements, for expert testimony in failure analyses, or to explain the mechanical behavior of tested materials.

Using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) capabilities provides us a quick and simple technique to obtain semi-quantitative elemental analysis of samples.

We have upgraded and digitized our existing Optical Microscopes as well. This allows us to send information to customers instantaneously via electronic connections and has streamlined data processing and improved efficiency.

CENTRAL
COATINGS LAB

Metcut excels at examining and evaluating coatings, and certifying coating quality. We also provide the comprehensive training necessary to properly test and evaluate coatings and other surface treatments in your own facilities.

We established the Central Coatings Lab in 1995 to improve trainees’ understanding of coatings analysis and to promote a consistent industry-wide evaluation system. Our classes focus on standardized metallographic preparation, mechanical testing, and interpretation. The techniques and standards we teach meet the requirements of General Electric Aircraft Engines Quality Specification S-459. We also continue to expand our certification training.

Metcut Research conducts round-robin testing for both domestic and offshore coatings suppliers. We’re now offering online class registration! To view the upcoming CCL class schedule and register online, visit the Central Coatings Lab website.

STRUCTURAL

Component Structural Testing is conducted on metallic and composite materials, in single axis, torsion, axial torsion and multiple axis configurations for the aerospace, land transportation and biomedical industries to meet the requirements of various acceptance standards.

A recent addition to our laboratory is an 1800 square foot strong floor and a 15-axis servo controller for the control of force or displacement and variable phase relationship. The strong floor is capable of up to 200kip per axis of loading. A variety of ancillary sensor equipment is available to optimize the testing of your component to meet specific needs. Additionally, the digital acquisition of strain, load, temperature and displacement can be measured on up to 100 channels simultaneously.
